The Sword in the Stone

SwordstoneI recently read this delightful book when looking for something to listen to while at work. I don’t know why I keep doing that as I get distracted when it’s a new book and I end up just using it for workouts.*

Anyhow, I don’t remember this being so funny from my childhood reading! I found such small things amusing, the insults, the attack on a giant (they taunted him and called him a momma’s boy). The way King Arthur is portrayed as the small boy wart made me instantly love him and cheer him on knowing he would one day be king. It’s the type of book I cannot wait to read with my children, to see the parts where they are amused the most, to see when they figure out that Wart is being taught special skills by the magical Merlin so that he can be the best King there is.The Once and Future King has 5 installments and that was just one. I am sad because I think now that Arthur is an adult it won’t be as delightful but I hope I am surprised.
* I do listen to Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal over and over again at work. Repetition doesn’t make me love it any less.
